Bio / presentation
The Archaeological Ensemble of Itálica is located in Santiponce, Seville, and houses the remains of the first Roman city founded in Hispania in 206 BCE. It was established by Publius Cornelius Scipio during the Second Punic War, and served as a settlement for wounded soldiers, playing a strategic role in Roman expansion. Among its most notable structures is the amphitheater, with a capacity for 25,000 spectators, considered one of the largest in the Roman Empire. The site also allows visitors to walk through the layout of its streets, explore houses, public buildings, and admire artworks and everyday utensils used by its inhabitants. Itálica was also the birthplace of emperors Trajan and Hadrian, who contributed to its architectural and urban development. Today, the archaeological complex stands as an invaluable testimony to the Roman legacy on the Iberian Peninsula.
