Bio / presentation

El Soplao Cave, located in the municipalities of Valdáliga, Herrerías, and Rionansa (Cantabria), is a world-renowned underground heritage site. Discovered in the early 20th century during mining operations, it is famous for its exceptional abundance of eccentric speleothems—stalactites that defy gravity—as well as stalagmites, flowstones, and draperies. The cave forms part of a historical mining complex and is valued for its geological, historical, and industrial significance. The main tourist route is fully adapted with artistic lighting and accessible pathways. In addition to regular visits, adventure and scientific tours are offered. Its uniqueness makes El Soplao an icon of geological tourism in Spain and Europe. The site is managed by a public company under the Government of Cantabria, in collaboration with local authorities.
