Bio / presentation
The Geological and Mining Institute of Spain (IGME) was established in 1849 as a geological mapping commission. It adopted its current name in 1910 and was modernized in 1927. In 1977, it became an autonomous body, and in 1986 it was designated a Public Research Organization. In 2000, it regained its traditional name by Royal Decree. In 2021, the IGME was integrated as a national center within the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), ceasing to be an independent body. Its mission is to provide the national and regional governments, and society at large, with scientific knowledge and technical services related to Earth sciences and technologies. It serves as a national benchmark in research and support for land use, natural resources, and environmental sustainability.
