Bio / presentation

The Andes 1972 Museum, inaugurated on October 11, 2013, is a private institution dedicated to preserving the memory of the crash of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, which occurred in the Andes Mountains in 1972. Located in Montevideo's Ciudad Vieja, the museum displays personal belongings, original documents, photographs, and parts of the wrecked aircraft, as well as recreations of improvised elements used by the survivors during the 72 days they endured extreme conditions. The space also pays tribute to Chilean muleteer Sergio Catalán, who played a key role in the rescue. The museum was declared of Cultural and Tourist Interest by Uruguay’s Ministry of Education and Culture and the Ministry of Tourism.
