Bio / presentation
The Museum of Pre-Columbian and Indigenous Art (MAPI), founded in 2004, is dedicated to preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of the Indigenous peoples of the Americas. Located in a 19th-century historic building in Montevideo’s Ciudad Vieja—declared a National Historic Monument—the museum holds a permanent collection of over 7,000 archaeological and ethnographic pieces from various Latin American cultures. In addition to its permanent exhibitions, MAPI organizes temporary shows, educational programs, and cultural events that foster awareness and respect for cultural diversity. Its interdisciplinary approach and commitment to accessibility make it a key reference in contemporary museology in Uruguay.
