Bio / presentation
The Teatro Circo Price has had many lives. We have to go back to the 19th century to discover its beginnings, in the hands of Thomas Price. Mr Price was an Irish horse trainer from an ancient line of acrobats who arrived in Madrid in 1847. The Circo Estable de Madrid was conceived in 1999 with three objectives: the revitalisation of the Lavapiés neighbourhood, the creation of a cultural institution and the protection of the historic architecture of the area. The site for the construction of the circus, in Ronda de Atocha, was acquired by Madrid City Council following the signing of an agreement with the National Institute of Performing Arts and Music (INAEM) on 2 June 1999. The project, designed by the architect Mariano Bayón, began in 2002 and represented a total investment by the City Council of more than 25 million euros. This unique space joins a prestigious international network of stable circuses. In 2006, the new Circo Price Theatre was opened to the public with a circus show, followed by its official inauguration in March 2007.
